Day 26 : Doubtful Sound

Wow. Just wow. This has been the highlight of the South Island – even topping the TranzAlpine.

I threw together a makeshift brekkie and grabbed the 7am bus to Doubtful Sound. It’s unlike any other tour I’ve been on. I got a bus to a certain point, jumped on a smaller shuttle bus, got a boat, got a slightly larger shuttle bus then finally at around 12 jumped on the cruise boat that would take us through Doubtful Sound itself.

It’s incredible places like this still exist in the world.

I really can’t do it justice with my patchy vocabulary so I’ll let the photos do the talking.

We travelled through Doubtful Sound for 3 hours – passing fiord after fiord, waterfall after waterfall. The weather was real nasty, which I actually preferred, made the whole thing more rugged and ‘real’ than those boring blue skies.
At one point the captain switched off the engines to let us appreciate just how silent it was out there. It was a pretty special moment.

We weaved in and out of daunting fiords, even passing an island hotel at one point.

I really don’t think I’ll forget this day in a hurry.

I got back to the backpackers around 8, chatted to a girl from Finland for an hour and eventually succumbed to sleep – what a day!!
