Day 30 : Mount Iron

Snow! Everywhere!!!!
Today started with my Japanese buddy Yu Hei opening the curtains & quietly singing ‘Let it go!’ from Disney’s “Frozen” movie. I buckled massively. Just knew it would be another great day after that & it didn’t disappoint.

Yu Hei was a pretty awesome character. He came over from Japan a few months earlier and earns a little bit here & there by cleaning houses around Wanaka. His English isn’t great (my Japanese is worse!) so he has a cute board he holds up to prospective clients. Here he is photobombing the landscape 😀

I got chatting to a German fella last night – his humour and command of English was absolutely brilliant – we got on great and decided the next day to do some hill-walking. Much for the banter as the stunning views we’d get!

I’d heard great things about Roy’s Peak but the snow was too thick and I didn’t want to risk certain death this close to home – so we opted for the more sedate and still picturesque Mount Iron.

Iron was a really easy climb and the views of the snow-capped hills and mountains were just perfect. Again, I’ll try not to ramble and just let you enjoy the pics 😀

Phillip and I got on superbly – he was hitting me with film and TV recommendations from every angle and just generally keeping me in stitches. Been so fortunate along the way that I’ve been a magnet for very funny and interesting people.

After descending Mount Iron we visited the brilliant, Puzzling World. This was crazy. Take a look at their website – a little like Camera Obscura in Edinburgh – illusions everywhere! And the Maze. Oh God, the Maze! Me & Phillip reached all four corners quite quickly but then took another 45 minutes to find the exit :-O

Later that day, we grabbed a burger and sat down to watch the ‘Nazis from the Moon’ genre classic, “Iron Sky”. It was a riot 😀

Bit of sleep then I’m off back to Queenstown for the final few days of my adventure here 🙂

  2. Thanks for my birthday wishes, Michael,
even ‘though you ” twanged ” throughout your singing Happy Birthday
It must have been a bad line as I’ve heard you do a mean version of
An Island In The Sun (Penpont)
I came back from Carlisle and there it was on the porch floor
No, Fly’s in the kitchen, remember
    Your birthday card, of course
The Postie was told to look out for it
    Just one question
    Where is Level 2
Is that where you go for a prize
    Right everyone,
    we’re off to Level 2
You better be on the Level, Michael
